Precedent for falsifying suspect identities

Summary

This one is really just to note that it is not prima facie outrageous to suggest the government might have invented the hijacker identities. Carefully prepared false identities were an integral part of the documented Operation Northwoods plan (the 1960s plan to create terrorist events to justify a war on Cuba).

Source: Declassified memo to the Joint Chiefs of Staff with subject line "Justification for US Military Intervention in Cuba", sketching out various scenarios for Operation Northwoods.

Analysis

Well, this is somewhat suspicious as a glimpse into how the right-wing military mind works, and it does prove that the suggestion that the hijackers weren't even real is not blatantly wild loony-ism. I'm just focusing on the false identities issue here. Other inferences from Operation Northwoods are dealt with elsewhere.

Bottom line, me, I give it:

somewhat suspicioussomewhat suspicious

These people would do anything whatsoever to support their cause. Anything.

Yeah, I think if you're willing to ram a plane into a building, you're pretty much willing to do a bit of identity falsification along the way as well.
